our national debt: laugh through the tears

I have to admit, I’ve been frequenting CNN.com far too often the last few weeks in an attempt to keep up with all of the latest developments in the presidential race and the financial crisis. I’m talking every 5 minutes. I’m beginning to understand and embody the term news junkie. Come on, I just need a taste, some new poll numbers, DOW Jones updates, A scathing Palin critique, something!
So this morning I made my first visit and was struck by an image and story that I thought was funny, yet seriously frightening. Just take a look at this image:
US National Debt Clock
It’s one thing to hear that our national debt is 10 trillion dollars, but to see it represented on the US National Debt clock puts it in perspective. That’s a lot of digits. So what I thought was funny was that they ran out of space on the Debt Clock and had to remove the dollar sign in order to make the jump to double-digit trillion figure. Better yet, they’re planning to add two more spaces to accommodate a debt figure in the QUADRILLIONS.
I just have to laugh.

McCain has a lot of friends

My friends, like many of you I watched the second presidential debate, and my friends, I have to tell you, I was astonished by how many times McCain said “my friends”. My friends, it was like his opener for every other sentence! I wanted to check how many times to be exact, and luckily my friends, the Sleuth at the Washington Post tallied it up. 22 times, my friends. 22. Read her full recap:

mccain says my friends

So the debate was 90 minutes, equal time to both, my friends let’s say McCain spoke for roughly 45 minutes, meaning he averaged a “my friends” about every 2 minutes. Seeing as how polls show Obama was viewed as more likeable during the debate by a whopping 65% to 28%, McCain might want to bump up to using “my friends” every minute. And if he does, people playing this debate drinking game should probably stop. Ouch.
