One of the best elements of live comedy for me is the composure required by performers to deliver the humor without succumbing to it. The seasoned comedy watcher can spot a quivering lip, a coy hand to the face to mask a chuckle, but best Improv troupes, the likes of UCB Theater, and the cast on live TV such as SNL, have got it down. But you wouldn’t know that by watching this SNL clip of Debbie Downer. Not at all.

God, I love the word bloopers. It could mean nearly anything and I’d love it just for the joy of saying it. It could easily be the name of a candy, maybe an STD, a type of exotic fish…it’d be awesome regardless. Still, bloopers in it’s understood meaning is pretty good. I personally feel one of the best measures of a comedian or comedic actor’s true chops is the ability to make fellow comedians or actors crack up. This is best evidenced most often in the blooper reel, a standard now found in many DVD bonus sections. It’s one thing on a movie set, it’s another thing during live T.V., say on SNL. Once the chuckles start, they’re pretty darn contagious.
So wait, laughter is both a medicine and contagious? My mind is blown.
Will Ferrell is a funny dude and it’s a lot of fun to watch him crack up the folks around him and lose it himself from time to time. Bloopers.
